5 Easy Snowboard Tricks You Need to Learn First

If you're just getting started in the terrain park, choosing the right tricks can make all the difference. The best beginner park tricks are low consequence, easy to practice, and build the foundation you'll need for more advanced freestyle riding. A great place to start is the 50/50 on a box. The goal is simply to ride straight across the feature with your snowboard flat and your weight centered over the board. Before getting on the box, use short, controlled turns to line yourself up and dial in the correct speed. Keep your knees bent, your back straight, and avoid putting pressure on either your toe or heel edge while you're sliding. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is rushing the approach, so practice lining yourself up on the snow before taking your first box lap.

Once you're comfortable riding features, the next trick to learn is a basic grab on a small jump. Before adding a grab, make sure you're confident doing straight airs and small ollies. Practicing the motion on the snow first will help build muscle memory so the grab feels natural once you're airborne. An indie grab reaching your back hand between your bindings to grab the toe edge is one of the easiest grabs to learn. Focus on getting a clean pop off the lip before thinking about the grab. Many beginners make the mistake of reaching for their board too early, which can throw off their takeoff. Instead, pop first, let the board come up naturally, and then reach down for the grab while you're in the air.

The final progression is learning a backside boardslide on a box, one of the classic snowboard rail tricks. Before trying it on a feature, practice the twisting movement on flat snow by rotating your shoulders one way while your board rotates the opposite direction. This creates the 90-degree position you'll use on the box and makes it much easier to untwist as you ride off. Keep your weight centered over the board throughout the slide, and avoid leaning back onto your heel edge, which is the most common cause of slipping out. A helpful progression is to ride onto the box in a 50/50 first, then rotate into the boardslide halfway across before untwisting to ride away. By mastering these three beginner-friendly park tricks, you'll develop the balance, confidence, and board control needed to progress safely into more advanced freestyle snowboarding.
