Summer Snowboarding at Mount Hood with Tessa

There's nothing quite like summer snowboarding at Mount Hood, Oregon. Even though the lower part of the mountain has melted away, a short walk brings you to the massive snowfield where the lifts, terrain parks, and endless park laps begin. It's one of the only places in North America where you can snowboard well into the summer, making it the perfect destination for riders looking to keep progressing during the offseason. On this trip, Tessa and I headed straight for the terrain park with a simple goal: take some relaxed laps, build confidence, and work on a few beginner-friendly features. We warmed up on natural side hits before moving into the park, where Tessa set her sights on riding boxes, trying a small tube feature, and maybe even hitting a jump for the first time this trip.

The conditions couldn't have been much better. Under blue skies and warm temperatures, the soft spring snow created forgiving landings and ideal learning conditions. Mount Hood's terrain parks are designed with progression in mind, offering features for every ability level and making it a great environment to practice new tricks. Throughout the day, we worked on everything from boxes and rails to ground 180s, breaking each skill into simple steps before putting them together on snow. Watching Tessa gain confidence with every lap was one of the highlights of the session, and it was a great reminder that steady progression comes from taking your time, repeating the basics, and celebrating the small wins along the way.

After a full day of riding, we headed back to the parking lot to dry out all of our gear—a necessary part of summer snowboarding when everything gets soaked from the warm, slushy conditions. Taking boots apart, hanging gloves to dry, and giving the boards a fresh coat of wax all help keep your equipment performing at its best for the next session. It was an awesome return to Mount Hood after two years away, and the mountain once again proved why it's one of the best places in the world for summer snowboarding.
